While all carriers provide multiple shipping speed options, the names for these services can vary from one carrier to another. The table below outlines the terms each carrier uses for their respective service levels. Not all carriers offer all service levels, which is why you will see some blanks in the table.

Key Shipping Dates During Peak Season
Peak Season Date Ranges by Carrier
Most carriers add a high demand charge during peak, but not all of them apply this charge on the same dates. Below is when different carriers will implement their peak season shipping rates.

Peak windows are getting longer. UPS ran 83 days last season (10/26/2025 to 1/17/2026) and runs 111 days this season, starting almost a month earlier. Four extra weeks of surcharges is a planning change, not a rate change — the same parcel costs more for longer.

Recommended Last Shipping Dates for Delivery by December 24th, 2026
These are the last days that you should promise delivery by December 24th (Christmas Eve), based on the carrier and service level you’re shipping with.

UPS had not published its 2026 recommended last ship dates when this page was last updated. FedEx dates are from FedEx’s 2026 holiday shipping deadlines for arrival by December 24. FedEx Ground and Home Delivery is shown at the five-day transit figure; shorter transit lanes can ship later, up to 12/23/26 for one-day transit, and FedEx Ground Economy closes 12/15/26. USPS dates are the carrier’s own published send-by dates for arrival before December 25; USPS Ground Advantage to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and U.S. territories closes a day earlier, on 12/16/26.
Peak Surcharge Amounts by Carrier
Published standard-tier amounts, per package, for shippers at or near their normal volume. Shippers running above roughly 105% of their baseline volume move to escalated tiers, which start at $1.75 per package at UPS and $1.70 at FedEx.

USPS
USPS does not add a flat per-package peak fee. It raises the published rate itself for the season, scaled by weight and zone, so a light parcel and a heavy one are not charged the same way they are at UPS and FedEx. Commercial examples:

Note: The GRIs above only apply to the freight portion of published carrier rates, not surcharges and accessorials. Keep in mind sometimes carriers may increase prices of specific surcharges at even higher percentages than the announced overall percentage. FedEx’s 2027 announcement is a worked example: against a 5.9% headline, minimum charges rise 5.88% to 6.9% and apply regardless of negotiated discount, additional handling rises 7% to 7.6%, the rural extended delivery area surcharge rises 9.09%, and 2,533 ZIP codes move from the Extended to the Remote delivery area tier, taking Remote from 3,591 ZIPs to 6,124.
